PRK

PRK (Photo Refractive Keratectomy) is an FDA approved surgical procedure that is very safe and effective.

Understanding PRK

Just as with LASIK, PRK is a custom laser corrective treatment for patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness and /or astigmatism. However, whereas in LASIK, a protective flap is made in the corneal tissue using a laser called a femtosecond laser. In PRK, the outer layer is removed before the cornea is reshaped with the excimer laser so that light can focus precisely on the retina.

Preparing for PRK

It is important for patients to know that recovery between the two procedures does differ. While most LASIK patients are able to resume most regular activities the next day with little to no discomfort, PRK patients will experience a different post-operative journey. During the healing process there will be some discomfort that are typically controlled with OTC medications and eye drops. In addition, your vision will take typically 1-2 weeks for you to realize your best corrected vision from your procedure. PRK was the first refractive procedure approved by the FDA in 1995 and has been a very effective and safe procedure for decades. Many patients may be candidates for PRK instead of LASIK, some patients prefer PRK, and even some branches or occupations of the military only approve PRK because a flap is not created in this procedure.
